About Motiya

From hair thinning to 13 herbs. From a kitchen counter to hundreds of women across Canada.

I didn't start Motiya to build a brand.

I started it because I noticed my hair thinning.

My name is Maryam. I'm a hairstylist based in Mississauga — and for a while, I was the one sitting in the chair, not behind it. It started small. A patch here, a wider parting there, more hair on my brush than usual. But as a hairstylist, even a little hair loss felt like losing a part of my identity.

If I couldn't figure out my own hair, how could I help my clients with theirs?

I tried everything. Expensive salon treatments. Drugstore products. Prescription options. Nothing worked.

So I did two things: I went back to the hair oiling rituals I grew up with, and I went back to school.

Tradition first. Then the science to back it up.

Growing up between Mississauga and Karachi, hair oiling wasn't a trend. It was just what mothers did.

My mom would sit us down, warm oil in her hands, part our hair into sections, and massage it in with a patience that felt like love. It wasn't fancy — just oil, hands, and time. Every mother in Karachi did the same for her daughters. It was as natural as feeding us.

When nothing else worked for my hair, I came back to that memory. But I didn't just start mixing oils and hope for the best.

🎓
Diploma in Haircare Formulation
Formula Botanica — accredited institution for cosmetic formulation. Professional training in ingredient science, formulation methodology, and product stability.

I studied the science behind every ingredient: how oils penetrate the hair shaft, how herbs interact with the scalp, how to formulate products that are stable, effective, and safe.

I learned about DHT, the hormone that shrinks hair follicles. I found clinical studies showing rosemary oil matching minoxidil. I discovered that pumpkin seed oil increased hair count by 40% in trials. I studied hibiscus, bhringraj, brahmi, amla — herbs that our mothers and grandmothers used for centuries, and that modern research is finally catching up to.

Then I started formulating. Not mixing — formulating. Every ratio tested. Every combination refined. Every product made to salon-quality standards because that's the only standard I know.

13 herbs. One bottle. No shortcuts.

The first batch was made on my kitchen counter. I tested it on myself. Then on my clients. Then on friends and family who were dealing with the same thing — postpartum shedding, thinning, dandruff, breakage.

It worked.

Not overnight. Hair doesn't work that way. But within weeks, the shedding slowed. Within months, baby hairs appeared. Texture changed. Confidence came back.

That kitchen counter formula is now Motiya.

Every bottle is still made in small batches in Mississauga. Every ingredient is chosen because the research supports it — not because it sounds good on a label. And every order is packed by me.

What sets Motiya apart

Motiya isn't an influencer brand. It's built on two things most brands don't have: years behind the chair as a hairstylist, and a professional diploma in haircare formulation.

Professionally formulated — every product is developed with tested ratios and proper methodology. Not guesswork.

Salon-quality, always — every product is colour-safe, sulfate-free, and meets the standards I'd use on my own clients. If it wouldn't pass in my salon, it doesn't go in a bottle.

Backed by research, not just tradition — we love our heritage. Hair oiling is a beautiful ritual passed down through generations. But we also believe in showing our work. Every claim on our site has a study behind it.

A complete ritual, not just one product — Hair Repair Oil, Soothing Oil for dandruff, Shampoo Bar, Conditioner Bar. Everything you need, nothing you don't.

52+ five-star reviews from real women — postpartum moms, women with thinning hair, women with dandruff, women who just want healthier hair. They came for the oil. They came back for the results.

Why "Motiya"?

Motiya (موتیا) means jasmine in Urdu.

My Nani's house in Karachi always smelled like jasmine. It wasn't about hair — it was just her. The flowers in the garden, the scent in the air, the feeling of walking through her door and knowing you were home.

When I was choosing a name for this brand, nothing else felt right. Motiya isn't just a scent — it's a memory. A homecoming. A reminder that the most powerful rituals aren't new. They're the ones our mothers and grandmothers passed down to us.

Every Motiya product carries that jasmine scent. Not as a fragrance — as a promise.

or packing orders

Made in Mississauga. Packed by me.

Motiya is a small-batch brand. Every formula is mine — developed through professional training and refined through years of working with real clients and real hair.

Every bottle is made with care, every order is packed by hand, and every customer who DMs me gets a real response from a real person.

I'm not trying to be the biggest haircare brand. I'm trying to be the most honest one.

No hype. No false promises. No 12-step routines. Just real ingredients, real research, real formulation — and a ritual that our mothers and grandmothers would recognize.
